Indeed, the various weather calculation at different weather centers are getting more and more into alignment - at least for the upcoming period between 4-11 September: That in Stockholm temperatures will soar to high season summer temperatures. Generally between 25 to 30°C. in Southern and Middle Sweden are expected.

Not that common, I believe
So I'll say this; getting temperatures above 25°C during September, isn't really that common in Stockholm. And perhaps i should add, i absolutely LOVE that we are getting these kind of warm periods. I mean, back in the 80s, it was rather rugged chilly. When I moved from Berlin to Stockholm, it often baffled me how chilly August months where, not even to speak of September being at times plain cold. I thought it was way too early... but those were the mid 80s, you know. Already during august, you would run around with a JACKET...
My memory about especially warm periods during September months are not really pointent.
I would have to go back into my archive to see which of them were unusual warm, or went above 25°C. I think that the records are somewhere around 29°C for Stockholm (i am guessing, though)
Oh Wait. I remember when together with Niklas in 1997
It was the very end of August, or perhaps 1 Sep, when we went swimming in the middle of the night, after the disco at Årstaviken on our way home around 03.00. The air was still tropical (around 20°C) and misty. Soon after that however, September got quickly colder, with a MAX range between 10-17°C, and the nights often dropped down (in the warm city center) to a mere 5°C during the last two weeks in Sep 1997.
20°C in the water as of 1 Sep 1997
It seems I had a camera with me wherever I went *LOL* It was the Konica Hexar camera (the one that broke the other month), with an ISO 1600 film. Going into the water was my silly idea, and i am sure we where ever so slightly tipsy. But it felt fun to do so. In fact, it felt really unusual with 20°C in both air and water (!) on a 1 Sep in Stockholm.

September 2002 also does come to my mind
Of which I was 3.5 weeks in Baltimore MD (with 26-33°C) returning on 26 September in Stockholm (with only 10-11°C MAX) For three days i froze my butt off as my body had adapted to the warmth in Baltimore... And in the swimming hall and during training - i felt so cold, so cold. The weather in Stockholm was unusual warm during the first 10-12 with up to 26°C. Then it dipped rapidly to unusual low temperatures, sometimes only 10°C MAX, and 3°C MIN (with frost in the outer suburbs) So yeah, the difference felt really stark.
On the day of my arrival, i put on a thick wool pullover I got from Joel *LOL*

The body gets spoiled during summer
I can tell, that as soon it gets a bit colder in the end of Summer, the body appears to be rather sensitive. Last night it was something around 11°C - and it felt almost cold to my body. Like every autumn, as soon the temperatures fall - it feels extra "cold".
While when you get 11°C at night in spring - it feels like ... Wooooaaah, super mild.
the Current weather situation
Right now, there is a large, strong Russian Anticyclone suited over Northeast Scandinavia. The thinking is, that it will re-curve, back into our region via Finland - which leads to that warm continental air gets transported on it's lower west side, into Middle Europe as well to Scandinavia.
By Friday the entire Scandinavia is under the influence of that massive anticyclone, even creating a "bridge" to an anti-cyclone located near Newfoundland in Canada.
Henceforth, the Russian Anti-cyclone will gradually move towards the east again; pulling back so to speak - which makes the warm air continue to flow into Sweden, albeit with a lot more misty clouds. Leading to fog in the early morning hours, I am sure.
While the warm air flow is thought to continue to flow - it should come to an end by a cold front located to the west around 12-13 Sep, pushing the warmth eastwards.
And so, this unusual late summer high season magic 2024, will finally end. Henceforth more weather fronts, cooler air as well unstable weather conditions are expected. And if we get lucky, perhaps another thunderstorm, who knows.
Yet the details I am sure, will change several times. Because it is still all too far away in time.
So. Let's enjoy summer.
Damn - i am working most of the time. And if i am not working then I am sleeping during daytime *LOL*
So, there is that. |
