I just ordered a 4th studio flash - a simple Godox one - which differs in that the built-in light has a LED instead of a 100 W light bulb. My thinking was, that the LED isn't going to get as hot, as the very strong 100 W light bulbs in my Elinchrom studio flashes. And finally, I would be able to use a colored spot, projected onto the photo background WITHOUT overheating the flash.
It is simple Godox Studio Flash for 110 €, comes with a flash power of 200W which can be used within a range of 5 stops (1 to 1/32th power) - like my existing Elinchrom flashes. It has a 5500°K LED light (fixed in temperature), and has all the basic features of an entry model. The built-in light will look cooler compared to the light in the Elinchrom, which uses traditional albeit differently shaped 100W light bulbs that are more like 3200°K
But that doesn't matter, because this Godox flash i will only use as a spotlight / photo background projecting flash with color gel's
Overheating with a Snoot has always been a problem
I basically had to use the spotlight without available light, simply because the Halogen lamps got super hot (and my first snoot was TINY), and with the Elinchrom using warm 100W light bulbs ... it all gets too hot for snoots. A snoot (spotlight cone) is often a tingy with crammed space - so the air inside it quickly getting hot, or too hot.
Or you just turn of the light inside, by only using the flash
My hope is that the built-in "guiding" LED light will not get as hot / or not as fast like Halogen light or traditional 100W light bulbs. Luckily i have another lighting tripod sitting here, so everything is settled. The only difference is, that the mount in the Studio flash is Bowen's, and not Elinchrom.
The good thing is that 2 days ago i ordered a special reflector for colored "spot" light photography albeit a bit broader angle like 40 degrees, which i can mount directly on the new flash, since it is Bowen mount based. I also added a real Spotlight cone (with color filters), also with Bowen's mount.
. . . .
Left "Spotlight "snoot" | Right 40° reflector with built-in holder for colored gels. Both based on Bowen's Mount
Just to be sure, I also have 2 adapters on order, making the exchange of soft boxes or other utilities possible between the Elinchrom vs Bowen mount possible. For example allowing me to adapt Elinchrom soft boxes to the new Bowen-based flash in case that is needed.
• Bowen's mount -> Elinchrom mount
• Elinchrom -> Bowen mount
Having a "cool" spotlight flash (assuming that the LED modelling light isn't getting as hot) - i can use the remaining THREE Elinchrom's to focus on the person i'll take portraits of (instead of just two flashes).
