Apparently this is not an isolated occurrence. When i searched among photo forums, it appears that the dying / malfunctioning shutter, is a rather common occurrence. Some got it already in 2007 after introduction of Leica's first digital mirrorless M camera. Others got it later 2015. Often around a premature shutter count of 20.000 images (instead of 100.000+ shots).

Sad.

It has an old 10 MP CCD sensor, which gets very noisy already at ISO 1250. I will not send it to Leica for repair, because I have no interest into throwing possibly 1200 € on restoring the camera with a new (M9) shutter. It's just not worth it, I believe - despite everything else is working on my M8, including LCD screen (which when it breaks into a so called "spiderweb", which many seemed to have done - there is no replacement available, as Leica can't repair them. The original company who made those LCD screen doesn't exist anymore.

Mine was fine. It is really just the shutter which now quit.

But no, I will not send it to repair.

I only used this camera for handheld INFRARED photography, because this sensor and the ultra-thin cover UV-IR glass (0.5mm) leaks a lot of infrared light. This was an advantage for IR photography (with an IR filter) - and I loved to use the M8 for exactly that purpose during springtime when the greens come to the fore. As well for cloud photography, showing dramatic dark skies .

Otherwise - I didn't use the camera for anything else.
