The lens surely can render some really beautiful images in character; in the combination between fine sharpness in a very small/thin space of depth vs the smooth background gradually melting away. Not entirely, but enough to create significant separation between main object and background.
Now since mediumformat lenses are both longer, larger and thicker - i often get the feeling with the GF 110mm lens, as if it is a longer telephoto lens. The physical size is deceiving. It is in essence only a 87 mm ƒ 1.6 fullframe equivalent short telephoto lens. (Giving the background blur that of a ƒ 1.6 lens)
Different character in various 85mm lenses
Albeit not every 85mm lens renders the same image character. For example the CONTAX Carl-Zeiss T* Sonnar 100mm ƒ3.5 on a Fujifilm GFX camera (40 y.o. lens) has a very different image character. There the colors are quite muted, i observed. The background bokeh is more on the funky side, which means unsettled. Yet, it is highly inexpensive, one of the very few who truly cover the entirety of 33x44 mm Fujifilm GFX sensor, rendering surprising sharp details from corner to corner. Becoming very sharp once you stop it down by 1-2 stops.
Also; is a ridiculously small lens.
Did I mention highly affordable ? I paid something like 230 € for it. It is one of the highly unusual lenses covering the GFX sensor entirely, while performing admirably sharp, even wide open it is already very good. It only gets better when stopped down. But it ain't a bokeh monster.
Yet. It ain't a substitute for a native Fujifilm GF lenses. And user of the GFX system know this very well.
I can only agree.
