Weight ?

So, it is still about the new 200/2 lenses from Sigma and Laowa: I couldn't find the exact weight of the various lenses, because I got different values. Some wrote the Laowa is only 1660 gram, while others write 2.3 kilo. For the Sigma i read 2 kilo, but also 2.3 kilo. Ultimately, I don't know the weights of the new 200mm lenses.

The Canon is 2.5 kilo

According to Dustin Abbott, the Sigma weights "only" 1.8 kilo. A LOT lighter than the Canon with 2.5-2.6 kilo. Wow. It is supposedly to be the Sigma sharpest wide-open aperture lens (probably together with the brand new Sigma 135mm ƒ1.4 lens).

Here is Abbott's review of the new Sigma 200/2 lens.

The Sigma is excellent in every regard.

Sigma 200/2 a notch sharper than Canon 200/2 L IS

www.the-digital-picture.com Here you can directly see the optical performance comparison at wide open aperture. The Sigma is a notch sharper. In real life however, i have noticed that when you sharpen up images taken with the Canon EF 200/2 L IS, they become equal. I mean sharpening without any artifacts - which works very well with my old Canon lens in the many portrait images i made at Stockholm Pride 2025.

The Digital Picture gives the Sigma 200/2 SPORT an excellent review.

It is a worthy, and highly well priced lens that can take on the Canon 200/2 L IS. Given that a second hand Canon EF 200/2 is around the same price like the new Sigma... it is an excellent choice. But the pity is, that you cannot adapt the Sigma to a Canon RF mount body.

Which is Canon to blame, for having locked in Canon users to only (extremely expensive) Canon RF lenses these days.

The Sigma does have some kinks
(and the Laowa even more)

The Sigma shows a flat object at near focus (1.7 meter) a somewhat distorted view, and exhibits field curvature. Also sharpness falls towards the corners. I also notice that the rendering isn't perhaps always as smooth as from the older Canon EF 200/2 L IS lens. So, there are minor trade-offs, after all.

But the price of $3600 for a 200mm ƒ2 lens in 2025 is really something to write home about. Also for the Laowa 200/2 in the Canon EF mount, being even more affordable $1799 I regard as being an outstanding lens. It might actually benefit for portraits, where extreme sharpness isn't always what you really want.

Nevertheless

I certainly keep my 200/2 L IS !!! I think that one is just an amazing lens.

Also worth to note is that i can adapt it on a Canon EOS FILM camera, a Canon EOS EF camera as well on a Canon EOS R mirrorless camera. On top it also works on a mediumformat Fujifilm GFX 50s II camera. Naturally via appropriate adapters (for GFX it is the Finger Pro adapter)

So, what is there not to like ?!

Perhaps a 200mm ƒ2 L IS gallery ?

Boy I really need to make an exclusive Canon EF 200/2 L IS gallery ! We (Daniel and I) had it with us to many places like Hawai'i Big Island, Java Indonesia, Stromboli Volcano, Catania & Etna Volcano in Sicily...as well Lisbon in Portugal, Rome and Bologna in Italy, and of course at my home base here in Stockholm.

So, I did actually use it a lot after all. And there are many nice photos over the years collected, worth to look at.
