Boy, have I been sleeping a lot.

It is almost a if my body sucks in the healing properties via sleep. First 7 hours sleep, then up 7 hours, and then i got so tired - and slept another 7 hours.

Just BAM !

the Apple Weather app

It just came to my awareness - that something is off about the Apple weather app. Here is the thing; it shows you a location, and when you scroll down quite a lot - you get to know the so called "Averages" - how much today's expected MAX diverges from the proposed "normal MAX average".

For Stockholm today it is shown as "+2°C above average high".

But it is... wrong ! For Stockholm & (Snösätrahöjden) - the value of the is simply far too low what they consider to be "a normal average MAX" = (15°C) compared to the expected 17°C MAX for today. Which leads into that you believe it is warmer than normal.

In reality however, it is COLDER than normal !

Let me explain:

Here below you see today's "Averages" according to the Apple app (the data it relies on from some provider, i do not know yet, who that is). It says +2°C above daily high, which they consider to be 15°C.

17°C are expected today.

SMHI

I have an old chart from Haldo Vedin, a former meteorologist who worked for SMHI many year, who in the 90s gave me the daily Stockholm MAX and MIN temperature chart. Which is based on the climate period of 1961-1990.

I have that hanging in front of my desk. Since it has gotten warmer, based on the climate period of 1991-2020 - i have to add a little bit to the values (in general, but not always)

28 May • Climate period 1961-90

So: what was the average MAX for a 28 May in Stockholm during the climate period of 1961-90 ?

- 18.1°C. (it is an average / smoothed out value)

28 May • Climate period 1991-2020

What is the average MAX on a 28 May, for the climate period 1991-2020 ?

- It is 18.0°C. (But might be 18.8° when smoothed / averaged across the year)

(That number is based on a non-averaged / jagged daily MAX values I got from the past 30 years, when putting all those 28th may together, between 1991-2020. A value I calculated myself based on SMHI's data - in order to have a new climate period reference to compare to.
However I never smoothed those numbers out over the whole year.) For example; it will soon jump to an average MAX of 20°C in a couple of days (2 June)

So, with an expected MAX temperature of 17°C today accoridng Apple, the true value would be -1°C (colder than normal), possibly even lower with -2°C - if I would have smoothed out the average MAX temperature for Stockholm City being more in line with an average MAX of +19°C for this time of the year.

Apple App

The Apple Weather app appears to use TOO LOW AVERAGE MAX values, which makes the current (predicted) weather look WARMER than it actually is, when compared with the "past".

Why ?

Now, the question is... why would that be ?

Why making the current weather look warmer than normal ? In the current state, the Average daily MAX shows a difference between 3.8°C between the Apple Weather app (15°C), and reality (18.8°C) when averaged.

That's quite a lot in meteorology when you deal with averages.

What about other cities ?

I can only speak for Stockholm, because I have the data from the newer as well the older climate period. I cannot speak per automatic, that this applies to other places as well - because I don't know their TRUE daily average MAX from the 1991-2020 climate period.

So, I can suspect, that this Apple Weather App phenomena might even occur for other places. If it does - then it is deliberately in my opinion; to make the weather look warmer than it is - by putting in a too low average MAX values based on the "past".

Nothing in the Apple Weather app is based on factual values. They are all "calculated / assumed / predicted" - but not based on observation. That goes for ALL digital apps you consult.

Sure, they sometimes show very good accurate conditions. But not isn't always the case. People use these weather apps as "factual" - getting used to refer to it as real.

But it is not.

Observations are more REAL
(as long as they stay truthful)

Calculations are not; they are assumptions/projections based on models.
A model´s isn't reality. Its results are dependent on what goes INTO the computer.
Its results are dependend on internally defined parameters which are being assumed/anchored - but ultimately altering the process and results.

If the data is bad or parameters assume wrong things - you get bad results.
Diverging from reality. Diverging from reality means - it is a matrix. A calculated "reality" or "truth" which simulates something, but isn't necessarily mirror reality "as it is" in truth.

You can of course, still sell the bad data as "reality".
Like politicians do.
