What a lens. What a lens. It is formidable - and simply perfect. In sharpness. In focus. And the way to carry it with camera body attached, is such a joy - never too heavy nor too bulky. At the same time smooth, and reliable (with a second gen. GFX 100 body).
Boy, I love this lens
So much ! It is a perfect fit, like glove to the hand. I couldn't be happier. It was a joy to use it during a walk though Old Town Stockholm. It works absolutely fantastic when enabling Eye AF and continues (C) autofocus. At wide open aperture - the sharpness was exactly on a person's face. not the slightest Off-focus tendency.
With an edge over...
Which makes it superior over the Pentax 645 FA 400/5.6 ED (IF) - because at wide open aperture, it can miss the focus very very tiny, bringing a face just outside the center sharpness. However, in other situations - and with gentle sharpening - the Pentax 400mm does actually render images sharp !
The sharpness difference is rather small in comparison to the Fuji 500mm lens. The Fujinon however, doesn't truly need much sharpening - because the sharpness is already there - even at wide open aperture ƒ5.6 - and a clarity which the Pentax 400mm doesn't have due to fringing, LoCA and chromatic aberrations.
Both Eye AI and C-AF are with the GF500/5.6 perfect; the exact focus point is easy to acquire on the face you wish to be sharp. No second guessing or fiddling.
I simply love that. It feels far more reliable.
Here is an example
of the girl at 100% - on her face i set the focus point. You even see every single hair... Yet she was around 40- 50 meter away...
