How did the GFX 100s II perform
together with the extreme Fujinon 500/5.6 OIS lens ? Well, I must say... with mixed results - but overly on the positive side.
The AF issues with moving people
One thing is for sure: the AF with eye AF enabled, sometimes misses the exact focus. Actually it misses it as soon people are moving, and you try to follow them. The faster they move, the more difficult and impossible it gets. Reviewers who pointed at this, are correct. This is not a camera made for speed.
It does excellent work with people who are standing still, or not moving too much - then you have the highest quality at your disposal on 102 Megapixels, with a 400 mm focal length in real life photos. If you cut the frame down to 60 MP, you get 500mm focal length, equivalent to fullframe.
Even more crop can be done - there is plenty of room for it if needed (It still feels utmost weird to have such enourmous image files and resolution at my disposal, to say the least). I still would love the sensor tech of the newer 102 MP sensor in a 51 MP sensor instead !!!
That would be the totally awesome. I do feel that 102 MP are simply too much - as well it takes enourmous resources from the computer, as well. It took me many hours to prepare the images (converting them, which doesn't take that super long time - but including all the finer individual corrections in every RAW file). I thin i made around 180 images in total with the GFX 100s II camera.
500 mm lens at Pride
Due to the slow nature of the AF to do it's correct work - and the extreme focal length of 400mm, the setup with a mediuformat camera at Pride, isn't ideal.
Will use the Canon R6 again next year
I will definitely use my Canon EOS R6 next year, like I did in 2025 - together with the EF 200/2 L IS, and the 300/4 L IS lenses. Add some sharpening - and the images shine down into the finest details. Also to recommend is the Canon EF 70-200/2.8 L IS II and III (or the RF mount version equivalents) which altogether do excellent work at a Pride Train Event. Daniel did that back in 2013, with excellent quality in his images plus that the zoom gave him greater flexibility.
Of course my horse
Any upper level fullframe camera will and is faster, as well often more precise in focus of relatively faster moving people, than a GFX 100s II type of camera.
While the slower Fujinon GFX 50s II, would be even more erratic in such an event - and God knows how many times it would misfocus if anything move slightly faster into any direction. You could use the GFX 50s II camera - but only with stationary people, no stress in your mind under good light, and a not too extreme lens like i used the GF 500/5.6 OIS.
Well, I WANTED to test this, remember. I wanted to see how the quality, performance and handling feels like at an event like a Pride Parade. |
