I wrote about that the manual focus Samyang XP 85/1.2 lens is identified as a "Canon EF 85/1.2 L II" lens in EXIF data, when you adapt it to a Canon EOS camera.

This might have something to do with that it correct the lens according to the Canon lens - because that correction profile is of course widespread in most photo apps (instead of creating a specific Samyang XP 85/1.2 profile nobody knows about).

Not a problem (for me)

I don't consider this be a major problem, that the lens is wrongly identified - because they do act similar optically, only that Samyang is better than the Canon EF 85mm version. I decided to leave the error "as it is", instead of manually changing the EXIF data for ever photo i take with the Samyang XP 85/1.2 lens later.

Curiously - via the Fringer adapter (GFX camera) the identification is correct as "Samyang XP 85/1.2".

So, "it knows" that it is a Samyang lens, and not Canon. That is a bit strange... I mean, somewhere there must be that information stored in the EXIF, knowing the difference between them.

So, why not when mounted on a Canon camera ? Perhaps it was stragey ?

By identifying it as a "Canon lens" - the Samyang is being corrected in the camera with a correction profile (that of a Canon EF 85/1.2 L II lens). But only, if you have that feature enabled in camera settings (Vignetting correction, LoCA correction and Distortion correction).

Introduced in 2016

The Samyang (EF mount lens) wasn't exactly a mainstream lens, especially not today in 2026 an already forgotten lens. When Samyang introduced it in 2016 - just for Canon EF mount - it was at a time when Canon went mirrorless a year later (Canon RF mount, Canon R type of cameras). In other worse the beginning of the end for (Canon) EF mount lenses.

And yet - the Samyang XP 85 lens is optically & mechanically a treasure !

Muoha-ha-haaaaa

(WTF) For unknown reasons, as i just used the Samyang XP 85/1.2 lens adapted on the Fujifilm GFX 100s II camera (via the Fringer adapter) - I got suddenly an ID, that of the "Canon FD 85/1.2L" - the manual focus version.

How is that even possible ?!?!

Just funny, to say the least (since Canon FD lenses don't contain any electronic EXIF data to transfer).
