I do like the "kit" zoom lens, because it is relative compact as well light; just under a half kilo. However, one needs to understand that when you shoot it at wide open aperture - especially on the longer side - sharpness is a bit on the soft side. Especially if you get close - there is a visible lack of punch in the fine details !

I consider it mainly a daytime, walk around lens - where you in good light easily can stop it down between 1 stop and 1.5 stops - in order to achieve crisp, sharp details. (With analogue medium format lenses, that was almost always th requirement; to stop lenses down 2 stops at least, in order to get crisp sharp details. Often down to ƒ8 or even ƒ11.

Counteraction for slightly soft images

I use Topaz Sharpen AI software in images i took at wide open aperture with this lens - in order to give the fine details an extra punch. Like in the photo above showing a Metro train under repair at the Vällingby depot, in Stockholm. I used the lens at aperture ƒ4.5 at the 35mm focal length (equivalent to 28 mm wide angle on a fullframe camera).

Overall, I prefer the fantastic Fujinon 30/3.5 lens (equivalent to 24mm wide angle) - and I do so in almost any light. It is to me a fantastic lens to work with.
